SDC has been appointed by the Wellcome Genome Campus to deliver the first purpose-built life sciences buildings as part of the campus expansion in Hinxton, South Cambridge.

With Cambridge hailed as a global centre of excellence in science and technology innovation, the development is set to be an impressive addition to the region.

The expansion plans will see the Campus increase in size from 125 to around 440 acres, supporting a community of at least 9,000 people.

The first phase of the project is set to be complete in 2028, which will boast the arrival of a 158,000 sq ft lab-enabled workspace.

Following an in-depth tender process, SDC are proud to be working in collaboration with the Campus – an exciting international community working at the forefront of life sciences and technology – to deliver this cutting-edge building.

Following a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this year, the project is now progressing at a steady pace with the groundworks nearing completion.

Sam O’Neill, Project Director at SDC, said:

“By combining Wellcome Genome Campus’ world-class research with SDC’s expertise in creating dynamic, innovation-led environments, we are building a unique ecosystem where life science companies can thrive. This collaboration will accelerate the journey from discovery to real-world impact, strengthening Cambridgeshire as a global hub for science, technology and healthcare innovation.”

Damian Bates, Head of Construction and Project Delivery at Wellcome Genome Campus, said:

“Over the next decade, the Wellcome Genome Campus will undergo an era-defining expansion, tripling in size and building on our position as a world-leading science and technology centre.

“We are delighted to have contracted SDC to deliver the first building as part of this major programme. This landmark 158,000 sq ft lab-enabled workspace reflects the future of our campus, with innovation and collaboration embedded at its core.

“As work is now well underway, it’s incredibly exciting to see our vision for both the building and our Campus becoming a reality.”

Beyond the physical build, both SDC and the Wellcome Genome Campus have committed to delivering long-term social value within the local community. The project will prioritise partnerships with local supply chain businesses, while also supporting charities, schools and sustainability initiatives.

Plans include regular community engagement through volunteering, careers events, and outreach programmes, alongside the creation of opportunities for apprentices, graduates and trainees entering the construction industry.

The project builds on SDC’s strong track record of delivering high-quality science and technology facilities.
